I collapse hard into my bed exhausted. I've been up for 38 hours straight. I'd been pushing myself all week, but after pulling an all-nighter last night working on my sociology paper and then going nonstop with classes and my work-study as a tutor in the computer lab this evening, all the demands of the outside world are finally satisfied and at long last I can answer the sweet siren's call of my pillow. It's 10 O'clock on Friday night, and while most of my fellow students are out partying, all I want is sweet oblivion until sometime around noon tomorrow.

The soft night breeze of late spring drifting in feels good from my cracked open dorm window as I drift off into Morphius's dark embrace.

Then at some point my torpor is disturbed and I am vaguely aware of an unwelcome something… a sound? A voice? …trying to work it’s way into my protective cocoon of unconsciousness, and then a tickling sensation on my cheek and ear like from a fly. Half out of reflex I blindly bat my hand lightly over the exposed side of my face only to hear a sharp feminine “EEEK!!!” 3 Bolting upright I can see a tiny naked glowing woman with gossamer wings hovering about eight inches in front of my nose. “Hey! Watch it. You nearly squished me!!!” she angrily shouts, in a soft high pitched cry that sounds like a mix between a second soprano woman's voice and the tinkling of tiny bells.

I stare dumbfounded at the sight as she fumed, fists on her hips and a scowl on her face. Then some bit of recognition breaks through my sleep befuddled brain. “Suzie, is that you???”

Suzie was a pretty girl I sometimes tutored. She was someone I always enjoyed spending time with in that role, and might have even tried to ask her out despite thinking she was out of my league, if I didn't know she only had eyes for Jim, the halfback of our university football team. “What happed? You’ve been monsterfied??”

Suzie gave me a withering “No shit, dumbass!” look.

Monster girls had been around for several years. Some came back into our world from otherrelms, some born to human parents, and some transformed into fantasy races at some point between puberty and early adulthood. Society was still trying to adjust and find ways for them to assimilate into human culture, which was not always easy considering many monstergirl races had special biological requirements. Lots of cases of speciest bigotry from humans and occasionally from monster girls themselves still occurred.

“Alex, please!!! I need your help! I don't know who else to turn to. It's already 3:30 and I’m not bound to anyone. And you know what will happen to me at sunrise!”

I nod solemnly, remembering my monsterology section of my helth class. “ ‘Any fairy, pixie, sprite, nymph, or similar Fey creature not bound to a human will melt away into morning dew at the moment of dawn's first light.’ But why come to me? Surely Jim…”

“Jim can go straight to Hell!!! The change hit me around eight tonight. I went to him as soon as I was able to get the hang of these wings. He wasn’t home. I had to wait until he got back from drinking with his frat brothers. Then you know what? He refused to own me. He'd rather let me DIE!!!!”

“What??? Why?”

“Because his parents are monster bigots!! He said if he owned a fairy girl they'd disinherit and disown him. We had a big fight and he dumped me. Please, Alex. You've always been so kind to me. Now that I see Jim's (she practically spat his name) true nature, I couldn't think of anyone I'd trust to turn to as much as you. I promise I'll make sure to be the best fairy girl you could ever want. Please may I be your fairy girl?”
