Hi! I'm here to share my 30 day data porn for the month of August. Just want to start off by saying thank you to everyone who contributes to this subreddit. It it so helpful, and I find myself scanning it at least once a day.

So for the month of August I released 7 shorts in total. All shorts were between 6K-8K long.

3 stand alones

(1) 3 book series and 1 book in a standalone separate series

3 Book Series:

I go the most page reads from this series, although 2 of the book in this series were thrown into the erotica section. I had KDP add them to my series page, and so my page reads went up for 2 of the book in this series, the 3rd book kind of feel off and had very low reads.

3 Separate Standalones:

All three of these books were places into the short read romance category. Out of the 3 shorts, only 1 of them surpassed 1K page reads for the whole month.

Standalone Series:

Book 1: This book was placed in the 45 minute shorts romance category and sat at #1 in the 45-minute romance category for about 3 hours before slowing dropping day by day.

Book 2: Was thrown into erotica, and to date has 0 page reads

Book 3: Did not published

Conclusion: I feel if all the book in my series had launched in the short romance category then it would have made a difference, by how much I don't know.

Things that I did(that I should regret) but I don't:

  1. Hired a professional editor for my 1st 3 shorts. I did this because my editor pointed out things that I probably wouldn't have caught. She provided invaluable feedback about my writing, and by the 4th short she was very impressed at the changes I made. Things like over used words, dead language, sentences that should be PUW(put under water) and the importance of using the five senses when writing.
  2. Getting professional covers: Now this is definitely a sunken cost, my covers weren't that expensive( no I didn't use Fiverr) but although I didn't make my money back from them, I formed a relationship with my cover designer and I will continue to use her in the future for full length novels.

Things that helped:

  1. Romancing The Beat by Gwen Hayes
  2. Reading romance books(DUH!)
  3. Downloading Angela Ackerman's The Emotion Thesaurus; The Urban Setting Thesaurus, and The Negative Trait Thesaurus.
  4. Naughty words for Nice Writers by Cara Bristol
  5. Plottr
  6. The Creative Penn( their website and podcast)
  7. 5,000 words per hour by Chris Fox
  8. Save The Cat Write A Novel
  9. This Subreddit!

The Future:

Working on 2 longer works. One book is going to be 20K and the next one will be 40K-50K. Will be back here to update you all 30 days after those releases.

I will definitely be taking advantage of the Blurb thread in the future, I believe that having a 2nd pair of eyes will help greatly. I made a lot of mistakes for my 1st round of publishing, but I'm looking to get better.

Have a great long weekend(for those in the US :)
