Starting out, something about niches, and help with the cover.

Hi guys, Ive been wanting to write erotica for a long time and I've lurked on this sub for months. I realized my own fetishes were too "out there" and after researching almost none of them lead to any good selling books. So I kind of diluted them, and split them into different categories, and upon researching, I can find a lot good selling books in these new categories. However, these "niches" seem to be quite large as well so I am not sure they can be called a niche? How do I decide if a niche is too big and not worth trying to break into as a beginner?

Another question Ive got burning since day one. How do you guys design covers? Im an amateur graphic designer and I've made a lot stuff like banners, logos and posters(for friends and family) but never book covers. Should I try designing the cover for my book myself, or should I play it safe and get it designed professionally?
