How to translate report properly?

HI, We are planned on upgrading to 10.1.600 and will switch report from crystal reports to SSRS. We previously had trouble with translation. Quote and sales order need to be available in French,English and Portuguese. I had a formula within each label to do it, but I don't like the fact that I'm one of the few people that are able to change a label that isn't right. I was thinking of a UD table for translation, so the sales and marketing team are autonomus totranslate the label. I am planning this right? What are the do's and dont's. Thanks a lot
