On the Future of /r/EnoughPetersonSpam + the 10th and Final Ex-Lobster Tank (Open Swim)
Post Body

Hello, you ungrateful pomo-neomarxist woke narcissists!

As you may have seen, a large number of subreddits have gone private over the last week, including this one, in protest of Reddit's planned API fee hike, which will result in the discontinuation of most, if not all, third-party apps.

Following the first two days of the 'blackout,' like many other subreddits, the active (and semi-active) mods got together to discuss the future of this subreddit. If you hadn't heard the story before, this subreddit was created five years ago as a spin-off of /r/badphilosophy to offload specifically Jordan Peterson related content - which was overwhelming.

However, in the year of Our Lady 2023, Jordan Peterson has reduced from the much-profiled public intellectual of aggrieved young men to a talking head of DailyWire and shock jock Twitter addict. Though they may deny it, most of his dedicated fans will admit to each other that he isn't the inspiring father figure that they fell in love with, how 'cringe' he's become for falling for any viral Twitter hoax (to dip into the genre of literature as deep wisdom, they'd do well to see the 'ghost of Christmas future' in the current Jorp).

This is all to say that there just isn't as much 'Peterson spam' to be too much of. It seems that there's finally enough Peterson spam. Over the last year or two, following Peterson's own career arc, this subreddit has come to mostly focus on either Peterson's undeniably batshit tweets or /r/JordanPeterson's swirl of cognitive dissonance and outrage porn.

In light of this observation, the mods feel that it's time to put this subreddit to rest. Starting at the time this post is submitted, we'll have two weeks of final dunks, nostalgia of past cringe, and any stories you'd like to share of your experience of the last ~7 of Peterson's internet persona and what it has wrought. And then we'll set the subreddit to 'restrict' indefinitely, so that this subreddit and its content will be readable but no new submissions or comments will be possible. (Edit: Due to a greater demand to keep this subreddit going than we expected, including offers to take over moderation, the current mod team will step down and pass moderation over to a new mod term on July 1st. If you are interested in joining the new mod team, please send a message to the mods through the sidebar.)

Of course, per Reddit rules with respect to moderation, if the Admins feel so inclined, the current moderators of this subreddit can be removed and the subreddit re-opened with new folks willing to spend the time and effort to filter the submissions, deal with the trolls (EPS gets many in waves, as you'd expect), and overall keep the subreddit clean enough to be a place to want to visit. If that comes to pass, then we wish those mods success, but, at least for myself, I think this is a good place, at this juncture of Reddit's evolution into a profitable business, to tuck this subreddit in for its final rest. It's been hilarious.

Yours in the Dragon of Chaos,

The Mod Team
