How do you use MG only planes

I’m playing through axis Tunisia and got the first Italian plane squad and so far I’m having no such luck. Every time I start up in it It goes like this, I fly around strafing spots on the ground getting no kills cause I can’t see anyone until I either crash or get shot down, occasionally I’ll dog fight but rarely Is there a plane up at the same Time I’m up. How do you even spot people
