Would any of you be able to help me with a little project? (motors)

Hi,
I'm going to b building a few miniature oil wells (about 40cm long) and wanted them to have the correct motion. I was planning on building it up and then just wacking any old electric motor in there and hoping it has enough torque but I remembered that you guys could possibly help me out.
Is there anyway I could work this out a bit better or is trial and error probably the best bet?
Feel free to use jargon, I haven't done mechanics in a few years but I'm proficient in googling.
