EDIT: If you're here from r/AskEngineers and are looking for the current career discussion thread, go here: https://www.reddit.com/r/engineering/comments/9gj3ax/weekly_careers_megathread_sep_17_2018/
Hey r/engineering! I'm dangersandwich and I've been volunteering as a moderator here as of 2 months ago, but haven't had time to make a proper announcement until now.
Some of you probably know me as the principle mod over at r/AskEngineers, where I've been volunteering for 3 years, building a space where people can ask technical "how does this work?" type questions, as well as questions on how to navigate the engineering profession. We discuss everything from coming up with a solution to destroy 15,000 gallons of inedible chicken eggs per week, to NSFW: selecting the right control motor for a variable-speed sex machine -- come check us out sometime!
My immediate goal with r/engineering is to re-do the sticky threads so they make a little more sense. For a while we've been running the Weekly CAREERS Thread for employers to post job ads, and the Daily GENERAL Thread for career discussions & questions. However, the purpose & scope of these posts were not well-defined and led to confusion as to which should be used for what.
Moving forward, they will be replaced with two new recurring sticky threads.
1) Weekly Career Discussion Thread
This will replace the Daily GENERAL Thread for questions & discussion related to careers, including advice on resumes, job applications, interviews, etc. One of the main complaints with a weekly thread is that the conversation moves fast so if you don't catch it as soon as it's posted, your comment never gets seen. To address this, the default sort will be set to 'new' to give a chance for everyone's comment to get seen.
- A new Discussion Thread will be posted on Monday morning of each week.
2) /r/engineering's Quarterly Hiring Thread
This will replace the Weekly CAREERS Thread and will exist for the sole purpose of letting users post job openings at their company. Followup questions and discussion are allowed, but they have to be related to one of the postings -- all other career discussion must go in the weekly thread. This will be enforced with comment removal, and we'll kindly let you know which thread you should be posting in.
- A new Hiring Thread will be posted on the first following Monday at the beginning of each quarter, as follows:
- Q1: January 1
- Q2: April 1
- Q3: July 1
- Q4: October 1
Feedback
It will take some time for me to set up these new posts, so I'd like to get some feedback on these changes in the meantime. The old threads will be disabled until the new ones come up, so if you want to talk about careers, you should go to the Weekly CAREERS Thread from 17 Sept.
If you have any questions or concerns about these changes, leave a comment below and I'll try to respond when I have time.
