Low testosterone diagnostic protocol
Post Body

I recently visited a urologist regarding concern that I might have low testosterone levels. This concern was based on results of an Everlywell metabolism test (saliva based), which indicated that my free testosterone level was low.

My appointment with the urologist was at 1:45, and a blood sample was taken afterward, around 2:00 PM. The results of that bloodwork show a free testosterone level of 47, bioavailable of 109, and total of 203.

Based on this one bloodwork result, the doctor stated that I have low testosterone levels. I’ve read that to confirm low testosterone, there should be two early morning blood draws. It concerns me that my doctor hasn’t followed what seems to be established diagnostic protocol.

After my last appointment, the nurse gave me my first shot of testosterone, and next Wednesday (two weeks) I’m scheduled to get my second shot.

I’m wondering if I should forego the next shot. Allow time for my testosterone to return to natural production levels, then have the two early morning draws so I have a proper baseline testosterone level. Or, should I just continue getting the shot every two weeks and get my testosterone checked again in three months when I next meet with the doctor. I’m also considering a switch to a different doctor.

What are your thoughts?
