plastic stops midway

i upgraded my ender 3 with the ender extender kit and everything went well for the first few prints however a minute after i set the printer to start printing it stops spewing out the plastic and i have to push the filament in the extruder in order to get plastic out. i got a new hot end thinking that was the issue but its not. im thinking it has to do with the teeth on the extruder gears but im not sure. has anyone experienced this problem as well? and if so how do i fix it?
