I'm planning on taking EMT classes in a few months. I'm a 29yo male with tourette syndrome.
I do not have vocal outbursts but I do have motor tics, almost all my tics are neck twitches and shoulder shrugs. I'm very physically fit so it wouldn't effect my ability to lift or carry things or people. It also doesn't effect my driving.
I'm more worried about how I may be treated by coworkers or patients especially when I constantly blink or shrug my shoulder. I'm definitely more on the introverted side but but my friends don't understand why I say that because I'm very good at striking up conversations with strangers.
I'm extremely passionate about medicine and actually took EMT courses at my local college 10 years ago but had to drop out halfway through due to unexpectedly needing a major surgery.
So, is there anyone here with tourette syndrome or a tic disorder? How has it been with your coworkers and patients, especially on days when your tics may be fairly bad?
