To Francis of Valois, King of France
I write to you to inform you that Maximilian von Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor, has died in his sleep. Soon the electors will gather at Frankfurt to choose his successor. I would expect his grandson Charles has already begun to make his case to the prince electors, and one wonders who else shall place his name in contention for the imperial crown. Young Charles has spent most of his life abroad, in the courts of the Low Countries and of Spain. For all his breeding, he is as much a foreigner to the Germans as any other king. One might suggest that any other king seeking the same dignities as young Charles may wish to announce his intent before the young archduke has the chance to cement alliances through diplomacy. One hopes that any other claimants would demonstrate their friendship as young Charles is likely to do soon.
