Late Spring, Anno Domini 1508. It was a warm day telling of the coming summer in Blois. The guests had been assembled on the benches of the Église Saint-Nicolas, their heads turned to the doorway. Charles in ostentatious dress and Anne in a blue dress with veil, the ceremony was just a boring ritual to get over with for the young to be couple, but an essential diplomatic milestone for the four monarchs present in the Church: Louis and Anne, Catherine and Jean. It was rather more important for the latter, though, and certainly not politically irrelevant for the Duke of Alençon himself, star of the show. Despite likely never coming closer to the throne of France than he was now, he would now move through court with the knowledge that he would one day be a king.
The priest blessed the groom and bride with holy water, blessing the thirteen coins - representing a dowry that was in fact the future of Navarre - and the ring that Charles gave to Anne: 'In nomine Patris' - the thumb 'et filii' - the index finger, and 'et Spiritus Sancti' - the middle finger.
Charles said: "ie t'espouse, moillier." and they were wed. The priest led them into the church and mass was held. In the middle of the service, a veil was lifted over the couple's heads, and they were blessed again. The mass continued, but the ceremonious part had passed.
Then, the guests went outside. A sumptuous banquet of hunt, French, and Spanish delicacy had been prepared in the sun, no expenses spared by both host king and visiting queen. Now was the time for guests to speak with one another, or to express congratulations to the bride and groom, and of course, for them to address each other as husband and wife.
