Reine Catherine de Navarre and Duchesse Douairière Marguerite de Lorraine declare in this Marriage Agreement that Duc Charles d'Alençon and Infanta Anne d'Albret are to be wed soon after Anne d'Albret has reached her 15th birthday, two years hence.
Under the excellent patronage of Roi Louis XII this agreement further declares the intention for peace and friendship between the realms of France and of Navarre, and for a mutual and stalwart commitment to the sovereignty of the other realm, from the onset of this wedding into the future.
And to this end, too, this Marriage Agreement will determine the matter of rulership, inheritance and succession, to be re-signed and re-declared by Charles d'Alençon and Anne d'Albret prior to consummation of the wedding:
if in her right Anne d'Albret inherits all the lands and titles of her mother, the Reine Catherine de Navarre, Comtesse de Foix et Bigorre, Vicomtesse de BeĂ¡rn etc., and of her father, the Roy Jean de Navarre, Comte de PĂ©rigord, she shall rule fully sovereign, and upon an untimely death, Charles d'Alençon shall make no claim nor aspiration to the titles of Anne d'Albret. Though he does not disavow the right to regency, the matters of which shall be determined at later such relevant date.
Furthermore, in the interest of France and Navarre both, the inheritance of Anne d'Albret and all the lands and titles that she may come to possess is principally to their oldest male child, or in his absence, their oldest female child. And the inheritance of Charles d'Alençon and all the lands and titles that he further may come to possess is principally to their second oldest male child, or in his absence but the occassion of an oldest male child, their oldest female child, or in the absence of any male children, their second oldest child. While such children may traditionally make claims against the agreed and legal order of inheritance, this treaty and agreement does not allow for such an eventuality: the child who is considered the heir to one shall in matters of inheritance of the titles of their parents only be considered the child of the one respective parent, and not that of the other. In the eventuality that there shall only be one heir, they shall be considered the heir of Charles d'Alençon, and hold no claim to the inheritances, lands and titles of Anne d'Albret, which shall be inherited by such relatives of Anne d'Albret as if she had no children. Grandchildren of Anne d'Albret and Charles d'Alençon shall be considered candidates for inheritance as were they their parent in the case of their parent's deaths.
