The campaign begins by the forces of King Ferdinand unexpectedly lifting the siege of Valencia and marching north towards Zaragoza. Cesare attempts to get several letters out to warn the French and Navarrese forces but none get through (7/20). He also attempts to sally forth to join the battle but does not arrive in time (3/20). The French scouts see the movements of the Spanish army yet do not find their final location but know it rests near Zaragoza south of the Ebro River (9/20). The French commander, erring on the side of caution, crosses the Ebro far north of Valencia The French scouts fail to notice the Aragonese coalition laying pitch soaked grass and branches on the battlefield (3/20). The French coalition army crosses the river and then marches towards the Aragonese army.
The French army scouts ahead yet all of their scouts are killed and they do not find the Aragonese army until it is too late for them to avoid an engagement (1/20). As a result of the poor scouting, the French army arrives unaware on the field that was laid with pitch soaked grass. The Aragonese ranged infantry spot this and rain down flaming arrows on the French and Navarrese army (11/20). The arrows light small pockets of the grass and succeed in spooking some of the cavalry but most are brought back under control but some 120 light cavalry and 15 heavy cavalry flee the battlefield (3/20). In addition, 137 swordsmen, 134 pikemen and 174 musket men are killed by the arrows being fired by the over 10,000 Aragonese ranged units. The Narbonne forces fire back of course (18/20) and kill 195 Aragon swords, 248 militia, 234 pikes, 141 musketeers, 98 light ranged and 62 heavy ranged.. The Aragon artillery, positioned on a hill above the battlefield, then opens fire with incendiary shot in an attempt to light the field but it is once again unsuccessful (8/20) in lighting the entire field. However, 230 swordsmen, 138 pikemen and 187 musketeers are killed by the artillery. Small patches again catch fire meaning 28 light cavalry and 11 heavy cavalry flee. Despite this action, French morale remains strong (19/20).
The Aragon lines now begin to advance on the French army. They advance with a repeating sequence of 2 rows of pikes followed by one row of muskets followed by 4 rows of swordsmen. The men advance under heavy musket and ranged fire, which does some damage (9/20) and kills 160 swordsmen, 156 musketmen and 252 pikemen. The Aragon cavalry moves to charge, the force of some 7,000 is not intercepted in time by the Navarre or French cavalry (3/20) and begin a charge towards the French flank. The French swords and pikes were not able to enter their defensive position against cavalry charges in time (3/20) and as such could simply turn to face the oncoming cavalry. The Aragon charge is swift and brutal (20/20) and crushes the flank of the French army killing 573 pikemen, 508 musketeers and 924 swordsmen with only 223 dead light cavalry and 105 dead heavy cavalry. The French morale on the left flank is crushed by such a brutal charge (1/20) and a further 379, 433 and 120 pikemen, musketeers and swordsmen respectively, flee the battlefield. The Aragon cavalry then turns back from its charge as the marching infantry begins to engage the French front lines. The French cavalry now begins its charge to punch through the Aragon cavalry and block the encirclement. While the French army is greatly outnumbered by the Iberian coalition, their cavalry plus the cavalry from Navarre mean that the difference in cavalry numbers only slightly favour Aragon and her allies. The French counter charge catches the tired Aragon cavalry by surprise (16/20) but Aragon rallies to meet them with a decent counter charge themselves (11/20). 350 Aragon Heavy Cavalry and 405 Aragon Light cavalry are killed in the initial charge. 291 French Heavy Cavalry and 319 French Light Cavalry are killed by the counter-charge. The infantry engagement is not looking good for France and their defence against the advancing Aragon infantry is collapsing (2/20). Despite the French shakiness however, the Aragon infantry is unable to take advantage and are locked in a slugging match with the French front line (5/20). 608 French swordsmen and 478 French pikemen are cut down while 837 Aragon swordsmen, 286 musketmen and 582 Aragon pikemen fall. Despite their higher losses, Aragon is losing a lower percentage of their men and continue to push on. This time the combat is much the same (18/20 and 17/20 respectively) and both sides perform well. A further 1504 French swordsmen and 778 French pikemen die. 1030 Aragon swordsmen and 833 pikemen also fall. In the cavalry engagement, combat goes much better for Aragon (12/20) than the French and Naverese force (1/20). 732 French Heavy Cavalry fall alongside 959 of their Light Cavalry. Only 235 Aragon heavy cavalry and 320 light cavalry die and the French cavalry force decide to cut their losses and withdraw. Upon seeing this, the French infantry begins to collapse and also withdraw from the field. A further 106 pikemen and 135 swordsmen die in the withdrawal as well as 529 light ranged and 404 heavy ranged infantry. The French forces manage to cross back to the other side of the Ebro without further harassment from the Iberian forces. Cesare catches news of the defeat before his army arrives and turns back to defend Valencia.
