Castille arrived to the New World to seek riches for the crown and the Empire, chief among these coveted resources is Gold. From our interactions with the natives of La Española, many of the caciques and local peoples wear medallions and golden jewelry. They speak of the rivers flowing with gold and ore veins across the island. Our prospectors thus began work to confirm these claims. Tangible gold reserves were already spotted in the region of La Vega close to Santo Domingo and has already seen hundreds of forced laborers toil away at the stone and gold ore to be processed and smelted into ingots. However, a new gold deposit was uncovered, that in Pueblo Viejo, by gold prospectors hailing from Nuremberg, contracted by the Casa de Contratacion to work for Ovando’s administration. For the next few months the German prospectors opened up a quarry and forced their laborers to dig for gold in the hillsides and the pit walls whatever gold ore that was found was quickly processed into the smelter for export to the city. The excruciating work however takes a heavy toll on the laborers with many dying both from the overwork, abuse, malnourishment and disease. Still the gold prospectors request for more laborers does not go unawnsered as more slaves walk in chains to the mines of La Vega and Pueblo Viejo
