Anne arrived in Nantes in early January, 1507. With her entourage and her children with her, she had decided it would be best to winter in Brittany and return to Blois and her husband in Spring. Besides, there was still plenty to do in the Duchy. She had met with the Parlement de Vannes in December, the meeting going very well.

Anne had a pretty big problem, a problem that she had ignored for quite a well up until now. The issue of the succession to Brittany whenever Anne should die. As it stands, the Dauphin Philippe is set to inherit and become Duke of Brittany. The issue of course, being, that he is also set to become King of France. To ensure that Brittany stands sovereign and independent even in the case of a personal union, little Prince Philippe must be educated to respect Brittany and love it. For the issue of a tutor, Anne has offered the position to Guy XVI 'Nicolas' de Laval, her best friend.

The Dauphin already knows of the offer and seems pleased with the decision. Anne was in high spirits, feeling as though God had blessed her by sending to her a man she knew would become a true friend to her son, and would be able to educate Philippe properly as heir to Brittany and to France. Of course, she expected that her husband King Louis may raise issue to this. Nevertheless, she knew that Philippe would be in proper hands with Nicolas. There was a certain sparkle in his eye when he talked to his future pupil. Anne knew he was not merely humoring the child and his mother. The Comte de Laval spoke as though he loved Philippe, and in many ways, Philippe seemed happy to have such an instructor.

Anne was seated at a table in the great hall of the castle, the Château des ducs de Bretagne. The castle overlooked the seaport of Nantes and was truly a sight to behold. Her retinue stood about her in a semicircle. Philippe sat nearby, playing with a deck of cards, which he had received from his mother earlier. The queen had been delighted to find the cards still in excellent condition. In their possession she found a note from Nicolas himself saying how proud he was of Philippe's cleverness and his skill with cards.

Even when the Queen and her children return to Blois, the Comte de Laval shall follow with them, staying in the royal household as he has done before, in order to continue Philippe's tutoring. However, such an important figure as Philippe still requires others tutors. Philippe must learn of the classics and how to read the best. Anne, an avid lover of books despite her lack of intimate knowledge of Latin or Greek, has thus chosen Publio Fausto Andrelini, an Italian polymath who was worked closely with Anne as a poet in the Royal Court at Blois. Andrelini shall ensure that Philippe will receive education in Latin and Greek and become a man truly worthy of being King. As for Philippe, his eyes light up and his mouth stretches into a wide smile. He is delighted with the idea of having two teachers for his education.

"This is a very fortunate day," he says with a happy grin.

"It is indeed, little Philippe." His mother smiles back at him and kisses him on the forehead. "And you shall have two excellent teachers once we are back home at the court."
