Furthering the defense of Belgrade, the Ban and Despot Ivaniš ordered for designs to be commissioned in Buda for the casting of a great chain to stretch from the Fortress of Belgrade to the shores of the Danube on the north bank, which will rest at the bottom of the river and be drawn taught to prevent ships from sailing up the river towards the heartland of Vladislaus’ realm. The opposite end of the chain will be housed and protected in a tower that will be built on the North Bank, with future plans to expand this into a proper fortification in the future.
The Ban drafted a letter to the King explaining that the defense of the southern border was of tantamount importance for Belgrade, but that the Danube River provides an important thoroughfare for the peninsula, and hopes that the Chain will allow the river to remain firmly in Magyar control and, God forbid, should the Turk besiege Belgrade, control of the Danube and Sava will allow for resupply along the river unmolested.
If Vladislaus wishes for this to not be done, it is within his right and we shall acquiesce to his requests : )
The second Chain was commissioned by Despot Ivaniš for his future child, as his wife Jelena had recently become pregnant. Made of silver, the chain was modeled on Circassian designs that the Despot had seen in Buda. The jeweler who was commissioned for the project claimed he had been inspired by the river that flowed through Circassian lands, the Kuban, and thus named his design Kuban. An enamel painted coin was the centerpiece of the necklace, depicting a Caucasian lynx, referencing the folkloric symbolism of protection. The Kuban Lynx necklace, when it was made, also had additional lengths of chain made with it, so that Ivaniš’s child may continue to wear the necklace as their neck grows into adolescence.
