Post Body

1501

After raiding Iberia successfully, the Castilians were now on guard. Wise to such basic tricks, the Barbarossa brothers did not launch another campaign against the coasts of Andalusia in the following year. Instead, they targeted the Crown of Aragon, which was still quite ignorant of the pirate scourge. The island of Sicily itself was the target for the Barbarossa campaign, who sailed from Djerba with no authority but God restraining their actions. Especially the region around Marsala suffered from these attacks. Pantelleria and the Aegadian Isles also burned.

Worse were the tales about entire villages disappearing. The ruined remains of the buildings did persist, but the people of such villages could disappear overnight, almost all of them caught by surprise. They would be held in chains as their home and everything they held dear was taken from them. Then, they were themselves taken. And it seemed like the pirates could appear from anywhere. Reports concluded that they must have established a secret base, but it would take concerted action by the authorities to root out this presence.

Results:

  • Barbarossa raiding revenue for 1500: Æ’116,855.29
  • Barbarossa brothers establish a secret base from which to further raid.
