Project recommendations to get promoted into Embedded Software programming

I used to be a web developer but have recently got a new position working on validating products using an internal tool for our company. The next step up the ladder would be to shoot for an embedded software engineering position.
In terms of getting my feet wet when it comes to the world of embedded, other than building a PC, what basic projects would one recommend for me to start learning the ropes? Should I look into purchasing a raspberry pi or an Arduino and try to code something simple?
