I am an embedded software engineer with around 3 years of experience. I'm currently one year into my 2 year masters program in computer engineering (with a focus on embedded systems) and am currently interning as an embedded software developer in the bay area.
Over time, I've noticed that most of the development work has become automated and most code is automatically generated (for example, the AUTOSAR stack). I am noticing that the real problems that developers need to solve are shrinking by the day. I can also see how embedded software development/testing/validation work can easily be offloaded to an LLM or AI of some sort.
Are my future career goals in trouble? Do I need to consider pivoting to another field? What are the real challenges and problems for humans to solve in embedded software in the near future? What can I focus my time and energy learning about?
