eOS boot sequence stalls on perpetual black screen

I've been using eOS on this laptop without issue for a while now. However, after downloading system updates a couple days ago, the system wouldn't boot, hanging on a perpetual black screen. I reinstalled the OS, and it booted fine. However, once I downloaded the updates, the issue reappeared. If I use recovery mode it boots successfully. Laptop has Ryzen 3 3200u with Radeon Vega 3 graphics.
If anyone has any idea what's going on and could help me troubleshoot, I'd appreciate it.
