Best part of last week: I spent Friday volunteering at a STEM day for 9-11 year-olds at a local school. I took in some electronics stuff - lots of blinky lights, big LED displays, a home made digital radio, Arduinos, some robotics, and we made up a very noisy 'fruit piano' with a BBC Micro:bit and oranges, bananas and apples for the 'keys' (fun, but sticky after a while'!).
A few students asked some questions about the coding, the parts, and careers in electronics and engineering in general - then one young girl picked up a DIY LED flashlight kit (basically an LED, 3V cell and some squeezy foam to hold the lot together) and asked me 'how does it work?'. I started to talk about the circuit and she stopped me and said 'no - the LED...how does it make light?' We then spent a few minutes talking about semiconductor physics, photons and energy bands...she was totally engaged and asked some really good questions....maybe an electronics engineer in the making!? Made my day!
