Having mostly gotten into this space within the last month or so, being on a long term rental with a Hyundai Kona 2022, it's gotten me learning and thinking about the future of EVs, all the infrastructure that will be needed everywhere (every single car we see on the road will be electric and will need easy, simple charging, at home, at work, on the streets, at charging stations, really a mind blowing amount of infrastructure will have to be built within the next 5-10 yrs)
But mostly I want to share my thoughts on how I think Kia and Hyundai (basically two different brands of the same parent company) have positioned themselves to really have a substantial head start in the space (and they already do) over most every other mainstream car maker.
Today, for someone looking for an affordable full EV, our options are still slim.
There's the Nissan Leaf, Toyota and Honda have pretty much nothing, Chevy does have the Bolt and the Bolt-SUV, I know Volkswagen has some options, and then we have obviously the higher end Tesla, Polestars etc
I know Ford has the Mach, but that again is a little higher end.
I'm not aware of any other fully electric "regular consumer" type cars available.
But Kia and Hyundai already have decent EVs with the Kona and the Nero, and they have the Ioniq-5 coming now with great reviews, and the upcoming Kia EV6 looks great...
It's clear to me that Hyundai/Kia made a concerted decision a few years ago to really go strong towards an electric future and it already shows they are leading this early mainstream market.
Here in Canada you cannot get a Kona, there is a many month long waitlist. On the Hyundai Canada website, there is an option to order any car online like Tesla offers, but when you choose the Kona Ev it just says "sold out". They aren't even letting you pre order, that is how much they cannot keep up with the demand.
The other car makers are definitely realizing they must catch up and they are starting, but it seems to me Hyundai/Kia definitely have a good 2 year head start, for this more mainstream normal consumer market.
I predict these brands will really shoot in popularity within these upcoming 5 years as they will build on this experience and learning they've got, understand more of what consumers need and want, and get better range and price efficiencies on their end.
Just wanted to basically share that I'm happy for them for clearly being the only mainstream company I can think of that realized the future is electric first (after Tesla obviously)
What other companies do you think are making strong EV pushes?
