I really like what the union stands for and the bennifits/pay they advertise when you top out is way better then IEC’s around my area. But where I’m working at right now the master electrician says he’d never join a union, and if I did join I’d go broke waiting for a job. I don’t ever hear about ibew jobs around here, and it’s a right to work state. Has me second guessing joining the union in a year or 2 when I get the experience I want to have before applying. Traveling for long periods of time isn’t really an option if I joined bc I have a newborn son and don’t wanna miss a lot of time with him, but the closest big city is about 3 hours away. If I lived in a bigger city or a blue state I wouldn’t second guess going union tho. Wanted to know what other electricians think
Yeah I can see what you mean. When I say I like what unions stand for though I’m really talking about the core beliefs and what they’ve done in the past for worker rights. Now days I’m not too sure what they’ve done to help, seems like the union is slowly dwindling which I feel like is a bad thing
Nah he ain’t the owner. He’s just a worker and he’s done a crazy amount of work all across the states in his prime. And I’ve called, but the problem is you can’t get honest answers from the people tryna recruit you ya know? They would never say something like yeah you might not have work for 6 months or some shit even if that was the case
To each their own. What do you not like about the union tho?
