I have been asked about the "enforcement" of have an arc flash study renewed ever 5 years.
It's always been my understanding that OSHA leans on NFPA 70E for best practices around electrical safety, and 70E specifies that the study is to be updated if changes are made and reviewed every 5 years.
NFPA 70 requires fault current labels to be kept current - but doesn't to my knowledge specify any type of review.
I am not well versed on OSHA. But understand there is a requirement for employers to provide appropriate PPE, and we know what we need for PPE based on fault current available.
That all said - outside of tort law - does anyone have any experience with somebody requiring compliance with the requirements of 70E for periodic update?
My angle here is justifying the cost of the study. Past it being industry best practice to keep this updated, I don't know of anyone who is going to be able to come cite us for letting it go past 5 years between reviews. Our insurance provider hasn't given us explicit verbiage about it. I think this is outside the scope of the local AHJ. I am in Minnesota for reference.
