What's the theory on having an ARP that follows your main melody?

Having a main melody with an overlaying ARP.

i struggle to have the ARP follow the main melody. selecting 2 bars, and just move everything 3 tones down doesn't work well to come from C to G. Scale is G minor, but should be irrelevant.

what's the theory behind this? I'm sure there are certain patterns we can follow to make things easy and sound well?
