I've been trying to think up new ways to inspire and motivate myself to write new music and learn new techniques. Inspiration is by far my biggest challenge.
While watching movies there might be emotions, or scenes, or sound clips which give me a huge idea for a tune, but I can never seem to do it justice. It never translates. It happens more often than I like... This led me to the following idea:
- produce music to clips (video only) cut from a movie and composed in a sequence roughly matching the length and progression of a track
For example, I might use one of my favourite movies, Sunshine.
I might take a relatively peaceful 10-20 second clip of the ship flying through space, and loop that for just over a minute (common dnb intro length). Then I might use a couple clips in loop from an action part of the movie for the main body of the song, and then another space shot for the breakdown at the end.
This wouldn't be for a video clip or anything. Just inspiration for production. You could use a video plugin (like Fruity Video in FL Studio) to show the clip during playback.
Bam, instant visual inspiration.
Has anyone tried anything like this before? Any success with it? Any thoughts?
