Reaching out to people you worked for and asking if they know anyone who is hiring

Post Body

I'm looking for a full time editing job. I read that you are supposed to reach out to people you know in the industry and let them know you are looking for work and if they know of anyone who is hiring. This is supposed to be a great way to network. As a freelancer, I worked for a small production company on a bunch of projects. I'm planning on reaching out to the owner and asking for advice and if he knows of anyone in his network who is hiring. On every project I worked on, he was there in the initial call and I also spoke with him one on one about a potential opening for a full time job there (they didn't end up hiring anyone).

The thing is, I feel really uncomfortable about doing this. I'd like to know if anyone has done this before and if there is a way to word this email so it doesnt come across as desperate or inappropriate.
