Using proxies after syncing footage?

I recently shot something in 4K footage for the first time. I had already synced all my video clips with their corresponding audio files when I learned about proxies in premiere pro. I used the proxy substitutes for the raw footage but it won't let me do that for the footage that's already synced. I expected premiere to automatically substitute it in the synced footage but it hasn't done that either.
Is there anyway to switch the video footage in the synced clips with the proxy files?
