Lamplighter Reviews - Cthulhumod Azathoth RDA
Post Body

Good evening fine folks of reddit!

A few weeks back the folks over at /u/Cthulhumod reached out to me on here and asked if I would be interested in reviewing their newly released Azathoth RDA . I was already a fan of Cthulhu, having owned the V1,V3 Cthulhu RTA,I loved their products a lot then so I was more than happy to accept their offer! Cthulhumod has made quite a name for themselves in the last little while, releasing the Gaia RDTA which was a huge success. Some have even said it to be the best flavor RDTA to come out this year. I can remember the Cthulhu V1 RTA, it was my first dual coil RTA and it was a major change for me. It was very well made and produced excellent flavor and vapor. My expectations of this RDA were certainly met! As a bonus, to you squonk lovers out there, the Azathoth is squonk friendly! Let's take closer look at the Azathoth RDA.

Packaging Cthulhumod did not spare a penny when it came to designing the packaging for this RDA. It comes in a tiny little gift box that is fully covered in a cloth like padded material. On the front of the box is a raised sticker with the Azathoth RDA branding and the Cthulhu logo as well. I was a little confused as to why the box opens from the bottom but it does. You simply grab the little tassel cord and pull, which lifts out the bottom panel of the box. Inside the spares bag and a little information card sat on top and underneath was the RDA neatly packaged into felt lined foam. The packaging it's self is simplistic but the overall effort they put into it is pretty great. I like a company that goes the extra step to make eye catching packaging.

First Impressions

Once I got the RDA out of the box, I gave it the ones over for machine oil and metal chips/shaving and I came up with nothing. The RDA was clean and ready to go, I still gave it a good rinse before I used it. The cap was really difficult to get off initially, at one point I was sure I was going to tear the 510 out of my mod. After a little coercing I was able to get the cap off, revealing the build deck. The deck is really nice, very different and well made. The drip tip is nice and long so my lips do not get burnt on the cap when it gets warm, I have been seeing a flow of RDAs lately that use those really shallow drip tips and I think they can be a pain. I tested the operation of the side airflow and the threads were a little reluctant to move at first but after I got it built and juiced up, they moved perfectly. The cap clicked back down into place easily and it was nice and secure. Overall, the first impressions of this RDA were as expected, Cthulhumod has done a great job with the Azathoth.

The Deck

The design of the deck on the Azathoth is pretty uniquie. It has a stepped design, while still being a two post RDA. The terminals are pretty huge and the space for fitting coils is also massive. The coils actually slip in through the side of these posts, so no more fishing big coils through post holes with this RDA. There are also little indentations at the bottom of each post, this is to accommodate the folks out there who are still using single strand wire. Kudos to Cthulhumod for covering all the bases. There is one flaw with the coil fitting on this deck, maybe a personal issue more than a product issue. I had a dual set of 5 wrap framed staples to put in this RDA and the legs did not quite reach so I had to hold one leg over while trying to tighten down the screw so that it would not slip out of place. It's not a huge issue but it can be a bit annoying. The juice well on the Azathoth is a whopping 8mm, so you have lots of room to drip liquid in there without getting anything run out. It goes without saying that with bottom airflow, make sure that you do not over fill it or it will be all over your mod. Overall, the deck is pretty easy to build on aside from having to stretch the leg over. I am sure some folks could easily just adjust the legs properly and it would be fine. I definitely like the design of this deck.

The Airflow

Seeing as this is one of the main selling features of the RDA, I had pretty high expectations for the airflow. I was not too sure how exactly it was going to operate before I got it and to be honest, it took me a minute to figure it out. To start with you have two bottom airflow slots which are 2.5mmx7mm. That is some decently large airflow. I tried it first with just the bottom airflow wide open and it was really nice. I found it a little more restricted than I would usually prefer but I did not pay any attention to that because I knew I still had the side airflow to play with. The side airflow is operated by just grasping the top of the cap and the base of the cap and twisting. You'll eventually see the airflow holes present themselves as you continue to open them up. They measure in at 2mmx10mm so this is where you can really get things dialed in to your preferred level of airflow. The more you unthread the cap, the more airflow you are going to get. When I first tried it with side airflow, I went full open. I actually found it a little too airy. I kept taking draws and adjusting until I was able to get it right at the most perfect spot that I wanted. This is an excellent feature. With the threaded cap, you are able to truly really dial this in to where you prefer. As far as the flavor is concerned, the build that you have in this RDA is going to be the winning factor in the flavor department. I had dual framed staples in it and I found the flavor was definitely better than some of the RDA's that I have but on par with many others. The domed cap I think also adds to the flavor, allowing the vapor to smoothly cascade out of the chamber. I think it's fair to say that Cthulhumod has done a fantastic job with the innovation on this airflow.

Overall, I was fairly impressed with this RDA. I did try some of Cthulhumod's earlier, first RDAs and they lacked a lot in design and QC. One I had the cap would not even stay on,just fell off constantly because the orings were not large enough. So it's great seeing that Cthulhumod has come a long way since those earlier days. The quality and design of these products is exactly where it should be. I look forward to seeing what they do next!
