Greetings brothers and sisters,
I am writing on behalf of my people, who are facing a dangerous threat. My country, Serbia, is currently at a risk of a nation-wide mining project by the company Rio Tinto. Their plan is to mine lithium, which is a highly toxic endeavor, certain to seriously damage most of our river system, fertile lands and subterranean waters. There is talk about other forms of mining projects (gold, zinc etc.) in populated, agricultural areas. All in all, 63 places are of interest to them, and if they pull it off, this would bring about catastrophic damage to the part of Mother Earth we inhibit, and us as her children.
We are protesting all over the country, in what seems like an uproar never before seen in our recent history. I fear we are even at a brink of a civil war, because the government is deeply corrupt and involved with the projects. We managed to fight them off two years ago, when it all started, but they are trying to push through this dangerous plan again. They say it will bring "economical growth", and provide the EU car industry with the materials they need. They try and hide the fact it would devastate our Nature, and us with it.
I have been battling with sadness, anxiety and hellish visions the past couple of weeks. I fear of what might come - irreversible destruction of Pachamama in these parts. I am writing this with intention of spreading word and consciousness about it, and asking for your help.
Please keep us in your prayers, we are facing a threat of apocalyptical measures.
May we use these kinds of situations as a signal for awakening to the love and might our Mother is. Today, it is in our backyard, tomorrow, I fear, it is spreading to other backyards too.
I wish you all harmony and grounding🙏☀
I respect your fight and it’s one we’re battling in the United States right now as well, even if most are unaware, all of these resources that are “necessary” for our modern existence are coming from somewhere, mostly Central Asia, China, and Africa.
There is immense pressure to start developing the extraction of these resources domestically in the US, but our environmental protections make that difficult.
I oppose these things but when you take a nuanced and introspective look at it, why are we okay with these mines existing in other countries but not ours? Why is it okay to export pollution and suffering to places that have LESS environmental protections and labor laws?
Cobalt mining is a great example. It’s fucking horrific what is going on in the Congo, but opening mines in Idaho is opposed deeply by environmentalists.
It won’t happen but I’m with others who suggest that maybe some type of societal “regression” would be better
