Clear Joy-Cons, Pro Controller, and Airdocky

Post Body

A few weeks ago, I purchased the clear Extremerate shells for the Switch (except the one for the Switch itself). I wanted to show my full clear set here. I’ve always loved the look of clear electronics, and I tried doing a clear mod for the Joy-Cons a few years back with a kit from another company, but the shells felt cheaper and were too big, and I also broke a Joy-Con in the process.

I took a leap of faith with these shells, and they did not disappoint. The Joy-Cons were the hardest part, and took me about an hour each. I ended up having to reopen the right one after completing the mod, as I hadn’t plugged in one of the ribbon cables all the way, causing the rail to not slide into the Switch properly. I also accidentally broke the in on cable that allowed the ZR trigger to work, but I kept the broken Joy-Con from my previous attempt, so I was able to take the cable from there. I also reused the colored buttons from the previous kit, and I think they look great. The d-pad is also very nice, it’s definitely worth it for 2D platformers.

The pro controller was pretty easy, and took me about 20 minutes. I used the colored buttons from another kit I used at around the same time as the older Joy-Con kit. I went with clear blue back then, as there wasn’t a purely clear option. When I found the Extremerate shells and saw the clear one, I knew I had to get it, and I think it looks absolutely great. I actually connected my clear pro controller and Joy-Cons to my laptop and used an online program to rewrite the colors that the controller icons will show up as on my switch. I couldn’t make them look clear so I made them light grey instead, which can be seen in the first picture.

The Airdocky was the last mod I did, and it took about 30 minutes. I actually did a similar mod from another company several years ago, but that one had a more boring black color, so when I saw Extremerate’s clear Airdocky, I added it to my Amazon cart without a second thought. The mod I did previously did not need the small platform that the spring sits on, which was needed for the Airdocky, so I ordered a second Dock and my old black mini-dock became my travel dock, as it’s a bit smaller, while I use my Airdocky at home. I absolutely love the look of the clear Airdocky, and it works well. There is absolutely no reason for the Switch’s dock to be as big as it is, so this is a great way to make it more portable, as well as avoid overheating, if that is an issue you run into frequently.

Overall, I think that all of these clear kits are fantastic, and while the installation process can get a bit tricky at times (especially when it comes to the Joy-Cons), I can definitely recommend these to anyone who likes the look of clear electronics. My Switch’s design feels much more personalized to me now, and I am glad that these shells are much more high quality than the ones I purchased 5 years ago.
