GPU Performance in external enclosure vs internal on motherboard

I tried to search around and couldn't find anything for this, but I was wondering if there was a big performance difference when attaching a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU vs running a setup where the same GPU is installed directly into the motherboard. I'd assume the motherboard would benchmark higher, but has anybody tested this out before?
