Well, what we originally thought was a clutch problem has turned into a full-blown transmission failure on the 540i. At 85k miles, the transmission is internally seized, and of course Getrag never made rebuild parts available for the 420G.
Anybody have any experience or advice to share on this front? The shop and I are trying to hunt down a reasonably-priced used replacement in good working order, since $6500 for a new box from BMW is just beyond the pale for what this car is worth. But any insights would still be appreciated.
