Instead of the anime shift that all the warriors games became, Samurai Warriors 2 was so interesting.
You had:
Bodyguards
English voice acting
Music that wasn't just do-boppy but actually dark and grim, representing the high stakes of the battle. See Samurai Warriors 2 Sekigahara and especially the Battle of Edo Castle
A story with a lot of depth. For example, the Edo Castle hypothetical battles, you could feel the hate and grief of Kanetsugu towards Ieyasu, Mitsunari's resolution, Shimazu's chaos, and (in Yukimura's version), the hurt of Kanetsugu again. There was so much actual gravitas that the later games completely lost to be all anime-kawaii
Why did Koei shift to anime shit? Why not keep the grim ethos of the game?
SW5 pretending Nobunaga, a brutal warlord literally nicknamed the Demon King, was a noble hero with his heart in the right place was an...interesting choice
