The Following: What's the deal with "Wasteland chickens"?

So, I started playing The following some days ago, and noticed some kind of chicken related pattern

First, in the small village:

At first, being a grown man as I am, I figured it has to be some "cock" related joke and moved on, then, I realized that the boxes of the paintjobs have these stickers:

"In memory of wasteland chickens"

and

"Seven flowers kicking a chicken into the sea the world tour 2001"

The first leads me to a reference on a Exodus RPG book and to the profile of one of the artist who worked on Dying Light, the second to a 4chan archived thread (wtf), but nothing to shed "light" into this.

Anyone knows anything?
