Hi fellow dyers!
I took a leap into synthetic dyeing recently (normally only do natural fibers) and had really great results with some workout clothing (I should probably make a separate post with some B&As).
However, after I thought I fully washed the dye out, I wore and then washed the garments with a full load of laundry, including a bright white sports bra, and there was some bleed. Luckily I love the color the formerly white sports bra turned out (a gorgeous icy purple). But I'd like to control and avoid that happening again in the future.
Couple of questions for ya:
- Is there any way to remove polyester dye? I strongly guess not, but want to double check since I'm unfamiliar.
- How do I avoid this bleed in the future? Just wash it a bunch? Wash in hot? cold? Some kind of post-hoc fixative (seems like there is only one for iDye Natural)? Wash separately forever?
- The dyed items also still stink like dye. Is there a way to get rid of that odor? Is that the sign that there's still unbound dye remaining?
Thanks so much for any advice!
