I want to dye my Halloween Costume but need help

I ordered a jester costume for halloween, its colors are red and black ( the material is 100% polyester) but I want to change the red parts with purple. I own a purple fabric dye, but i don't know if purple will work or should I buy a blue one? What method should I also use?
