i have this older crewneck with a beautiful embroidery design in it. unfortunately i really dislike the color of the garment and want to try dyeing it a darker color (maroon/ black?) but i dont want to dye the embroidery. i did some research but im not sure what the thread is made out of. does anyone have any experience or tips? i would assume tbe embroidery is nylon but im not sure. thank you for any help!
Polyester thread is most common choice in the commercial embroidery world, some people use rayon but not as often as it’s much more delicate and can be a pain to work with. Unfortunately there’s no easy way to determine which though, the only visible difference is that rayon is shinier but a lot of poly thread has a good sheen to it also.
Since the sweater is mostly cotton using a dye meant for cotton/natural fibers should in theory not bother the thread if it is indeed polyester. Just can’t really make any guarantees.
