So I'm relatively new to Dwarf Fortress, and I just wrote my first story. It sounds kinda bad to me but I always think what I write sounds terrible, so I'm looking for someone else's opinion. If you got time it would be nice if you could give me some feedback on this textwall.

The Heroes of Agedale

"This engraving appears on a floor in Anammabdug. It is a finely-designed image of dwarves by Kib Bekartirist. The dwarves are traveling. The artwork relates to the foundation of Agedale by the Odorous Shield of the Tower of Crowds in the early spring of 252"

There are many such engravings adorning the feast hall of Anammabdug (Agedale in the human tongue). They cover the walls, the floor, and every space Kib Bekartirist could fit them. They tell of the founding of the city, they tell of the successes of the city, but they don't tell the true story of Agedale. No, the true story is one of heartbreaking failure. A short lived fortress doomed to fail. But it's also one of heroes. Of courage, and of perseverance. These are the stories of the foremost characters. The ones who shaped the destiny of the Odorous Shield.

"This engraving appears on a wall in Anammabdug. It is a well-designed image of Led Tangleletter the dwarf and dwarves by Kib Bekartirist. Led Tangleletter is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the selection of the dwarf Led Tangleletter to the position of expedition leader of the Odorous Shield in the early spring of 252."

A company of seven dwarves struck the earth at Anammabdug. The two you will hear of are Led Lertethlolor (Tangleletter) and Momuz Solonbiesk (Flagviels). Led was a young dwarf, somewhere in his 50's. His courage and iron determination made him an easy choice for expedition leader. Momuz Solombiesk, was not a notable character until later in the saga.

Agedale began as a humble hole in the cliff side, but after a few months of work by the dwarves, it began to resemble a city. A few basic workshops, a trade depot, multiple dormitories, and a small feast hall were complete by the time Autumn arrived. With the change of seasons came a few fresh immigrants. Agedale was beginning to grow.

Over the next few years, the city flourished. More workshops were built, massive warehouses were dug out, and the feast hall was expanded and covered in engravings by legendary artist Kib Bekartirist. Over a hundred dwarves called Anammabdug their home. Mayor Aban Ralbasen knew that the wealth of his city would soon reach the ears of his enemies. It was high time the dwarves did something in the way of defenses. A few cage traps were set up as a first line of defense, and larger deadlier weapons were planned for later. Next, the military was organized. A competent dwarf called Urvad Elderoil was appointed as Militia Commander, and a dwarf lady by the name of Momuz Nakazon (Enjoyedhelm) became the Captain of the Guard. Six dwarves were quickly assigned into small squads under Urvad and Momuz. Together, they trained to become a real fighting force.

However, in order to be effective, the budding army would require decent weapons. Until this time, a metalworking forge wasn't needed, but now, dwarves were quickly dispatched to set one up. However, they returned with disappointing news: Their only anvil was missing. Agedale would just have to sit and wait until a trade caravan came along before they began outfitting their army.

The loss of the anvil came as a double tragedy. Missing his old profession of metalworking, Urvad Elderoil withdrew from society to work on an incredible project. Sadly, he lacked the necessary supplies. Momuz found him in the Craftdwarf's workshop, but he wouldn't let her help him. Crushed by the failure of his project, he refused to eat or drink, leading to his own tragic death. Urvad Elderoil died one of the least noble deaths of all the Agedale heroes, but he was also the first to volunteer to serve his city. For this, we give him credit.

An able guard from Urvad's squad was appointed as his replacement. He was a brave dwarf named Kivish Avuzdast (Minearrow). Led Tangleletter also joined the guard as captain of his own squad - a group of amateur marksdwarves. What the small army lacked in prowess, it made up for in courage. Never had a noble force served The Odorous Shield.

The fortress of Agedale had seen relatively few deaths in the last couple years. A resident vampire took a victim every few months or so, and a kobold once made off with a child, but nothing truly horrific had happened.

That is, until the goblins came.

They came from the South-West, only about 5 or 6 of them. Momuz Nakaszon and Kivish Avudast placed themselves and their small squads directly behind the cage traps at the entrance. Led Tangleletter and his marksdwarves were stationed behind the phalanx of half-armed fighters. It looked like it would be a hard fight, but Momuz trusted in courage of her army to keep Agedale safe from the vile horde. Unbeknownst to her, there were a good deal of civilians outside the walls. They were gathering herbs, collecting wood, and fishing in the nearby pond. And they were taken by surprise.

The goblins came down from top of the mountain and laid waste to the villagers. The little dwarven militia knew they could only win from behind their walls, but they couldn't just watch their friends and family get slaughtered. Agedale's small army ran out among the attackers and a deadly combat ensued. Few of the dwarves had ever been in a battle before - they quickly fell before the onslaught of mace-wielding goblins. In addition to their lack of training, most of the dwarves had nothing more than a wooden shield, and they were soon beaten back into the fortress. The only thing that saved them were the traps. They caught four of the attackers. Only one goblin made in into the fortress, and he was soon bludgeoned to death by a hail of dwarven shields.

Miraculously, Momuz escaped unharmed, and Kivish (the only survivor from his squad) took only a minor wound in the hand. Most of the other soldiers were not so lucky. Five of them fell that day, and the battle left both Led Tangleletter and Momuz Solonbiesk (one of the first seven; assigned to Momuz Nakaszon's squad) in the hospital. Tangleletter's right leg was severely injured. The foot, ankle, and shin were all shattered by the goblin maces. Momuz' wounds were even worse. Multiple internal organs were damaged, her right arm was cut and broken in countless places, and her legs were severely injured. The guard suffered nearly 50% casualties, but they weren't the only ones effected. No one knows exactly how many civilians died that day, but most historians estimate about 30. It was a baptism of blood for Agedale, but the goblin attack was only the beginning.

After the battle, many of the less stable dwarves went completely mad from grief, spreading fear and violence among the survivors. The army was mostly unaffected by this, as their barracks was on ground level, away from the chaos.

And chaos it was. Before long, the refuse pile was full of bodies, and the subterranean streets were soaked with blood. This was a dark time for Agedale. Dormitories were filled with raving dwarves, workshops were abandoned, and the once proud feast hall was a bloodbath. You couldn't take ten steps without seeing a corpse. The guard tried to bring order, and to take the safe, sane civilians up to their barracks, but it was all confusion.

That's when Led Tangeletter came up with a desperate plan. They would herd all the lunatics into the feast hall, and then seal it off from the rest of the fortress. Without access to the food supply, all the rioting dwarves would soon starve to death. Led knew it was cruel, but the madness had to stop somehow. Working as fast as possible, masons had soon blocked off the hall, and locked the lunatics inside.

There was only one problem.

Aban Ralbasen, the mayor, had tried to calm the mad-dwarves. In the confusion, he hadn't been notified of the plan. Now he was stuck inside a room with a mass of insane, soon-to-be-starving killers. Fortunately for the mayor, a guard by the name of Stodir Itdunkol was also stuck inside. It was the two of them against dozens raving lunatics. They just had to hope that their friends on the outside would notice their absence, and be able to rescue them in time.

It was a few days before Kivish realized the mistake. Miners rushed to the entrance to dig out the survivors, but all was still chaos on the outside, and the dwarves had to fight their way to the entrance. When they finally opened a hole in the wall, what they saw was worse than they imagined. A stunned Mayor Ralbasen stumbled out. After him wafted the sickly sweet smell of decaying corpses. Only a few dwarves had survived, and the guard Stodir Itdunkol wasn't one of them. He gave his life to defend the mayor.

Within less than six months, the population of Agedale had gone from nearly 150, to less than 45. Fortunately, the murders and riots had begun to slow down.

On a side note, during the midst of the chaos, a dwarven trade caravan had arrived and Agedale received and anvil, which they used to finally set up their forge.

About this time, four miners began work digging out a huge, intricate storeroom. They created a geometrical design in the middle and left space for statues. This would be a monument to the fallen.

Once, an insane cook went bezerk and nearly killed a child, but Kivish Avuzdast took the blow, winding up with major bruises and a torn right eyelid. Fortunately Momuz stepped in and was able to beat down the cook until he fainted.

After the tragedy at the hands of the goblins, Momuz Nakaszon knew her army would have to be better prepared. A massive load of iron equipment was ordered from the forge.

Things were finally getting back on track. There was a small issue where the dwarves ran out of beer (all the brewers had been killed), but it was soon remedied. Only around four people died from the drought. It was tragic, but compared to the earlier death toll, it was nothing to worry about. Sadly, Aban Ralbasen perished in this drought. He died poor and obscure - a regular stonemason. The citizens had elected a new mayor, one who hadn't seen as much horror as Ralbasen. It was probably a good thing. Aban was never the same after he came out of that feast hall.

Momuz was finally prepared to equip her army in decent gear. With their new weapons and all their training, The Agedale Guard would be a match for anyone who dared to storm the walls.

It looked like the city might finally get it's feet back on the ground. Of course, there were scars. Who could forget all those innocent, slaughtered dwarves. But those days were behind them.

And then, as if on cue, the goblins came again.

This time, it looked like more, maybe ten or so attackers. A hard fight was ahead, but with the new weapons and better tactics, Agedale could hold. The guards began to gear up. Then they realized, there was no gear. Somehow, it had disappeared from the storerooms. With no time to think, Momuz grabbed a copper mace, strapped on some panda bone gauntlets, and stationed herself at the entrance. The rest of the guards were close behind. All except Led Tangeletter and Momuz Solonbiesk, who were still immobile from their wounds. The goblins rushed down the tunnel and straight into the cage traps. The first four or so went down, but that's when Momuz saw the true size of the goblin army. No less than 50 soldiers were swarming outside the entrance, and eight trolls stomped down the tunnel. Before she had time to react, two arrows sailed down the hallway and struck her. She saw Kivish Avuzdast fall down to her left. He was hit straight in the head. By then, the trolls were upon them. One of her squad members was cut down in seconds. Kivish stood back up behind her; his helmet had saved his life. Momuz knew she was done before the first troll hit. But when it did, she was instantly down. Her shield slipped from her grasp as two more arrows sailed into her body. The mace fell from her hand as she saw Kivish knocked to the ground beside her. He was pierced with seven arrows. All of them hit straight on, in the front of his armor. Momuz hazily watched a troll lift his mace over her head, but she was gone before she saw it fall.

Led Tangeletter was in a deep sleep when the attackers broke into the hospital. He was never to wake again.

Goblins rushed down the stairs into the heart of Agedale, butchering civilians as they went. A guard from Kivish Avuzdast's squad called Lorbam Rigothroldeth (Craftsanguish), tried to protect the citizens. Armed with only a wooden shield, he held off first one, then two, and finally, eight goblins, before he eventually fell.

"This engraving appears on a wall in Anammabdug. It is a finely-designed image of Urvad Elderoil the dwarf by Id Etrasrovod. Urvad Elderoil is laboring. The artwork relates to the settling of the dwarf Urvad Elderoil in Agedale in the midautumn of 253."

That is believed to be Id Etrasrovod's last engraving. Deep in the heart of the mountain, he was smoothing the stone for the memorial storeroom. Oblivious to the destruction above, and feeling a bit thirsty, Etrasrovod headed to the food storage to get some booze. Met on the stairway by 14 goblins, he was slain before he got ten steps.

Momuz Solonbiesk was the last dwarf left in Agedale. Barely able to sit up, she was defenseless when the goblins stormed into her barracks. She was the first to enter the earth, and the last to fall upon it.

tl;dr Six halfway armed dwarves can't defend against 58 goblin invaders.
