What's the point of the Leagues??

I spent my time, actually learned a lot of words and phrases, repeated the prompts so I can actually understand what I'm doing and with 2 hours to go Sunday I was in 9th place, with 10th like 150XP behind and 11 ~250XP. I check back in with 30min to go and all of a sudden I was 11th with the previous people like >100XP ahead of me. How the hell can you learn if you're getting like 300 XP in 90 minutes???
