We live in Canada so there are lots of immigrant families, particularly where we live (in a working class area in a mid-size city). This year my son has a classmate who is a recent Russian immigrant. I know the kid has some English language skills, but he's also not totally fluent, to the point where he has a language support professional in class.
Well he and my son have become friends/friendly, and my son decided he wanted to use DuoLingo to learn some Russian. According to him a) he wanted his classmate to feel welcomed and b) he likes the way Russian sounds. I think it's awesome! He's been going strong since late September and likes to tell me new words and phrases he's learned. He's also learning from his new friend since they sit together in the classroom, and listening to Russian music on Spotify to try to pick up natural phrasing and etc.
Canada puts absolutely no educational resources in learning second languages apart from French, and I'm thankful to Duo for giving my kid the opportunity to do it.
