Why do my past lessons need refreshing so much?

I use duolingo everyday. And each day when I sign in, I see that at least five of my prior lessons have gone from full bars to like 3 or 4 bars. I spend MUCH more time reviewing than I do moving forward. This is unbelievably frustrating. I've done some of these lessons ten times! WHY.
