Question about Dune's ending

Spoiler alert for the first book Part of the whole thing at the end of the book is Paul and the Fremen threatening to destroy the spice, as a means of forcing their opponents to surrender. As Paul says, he who has the ability to destroy something, control it. My question is, wouldn't all the fremen die if they destroyed the spice? Isn't it addictive to the point of death from withdrawal?
