Dune 1, Carryall-Spice Scene Question

[ENGINEERING]

In Dune (first book as well as the movies), during the scene where Paul has an encounter with the spice rescuing the men from the crawler during the flight with Leto & Liet, the carryall leaves the crawler behind.

The carryall is supposed to be able to carry presumably hundreds of tons in cargo. Why weren't the they engineered--or at least retrofitted--to act as crew recovery? It wouldn't take much to fit even a rope ladder or harness rig to evacuate personnel.

I think it's a legitimate question unless it comes down to "Well, Harks = Baddies".

EDIT: Yes, in the book the carryall is MIA and never shows up. Mea culpa on that detail. I suppose my question is still more about how little it would take to accommodate some basic personnel rescue apparatus. Crews that survive will learn more and be more efficient than a constant influx of newbs. Even in the extended universe, Tio Holtzman recognized that it sucked having to train new calculus slaves. But, for the sake of paint-the-mustache-on-the-villain character development, really is just that, well, Harks = Baddies.

It felt like a shoutout to the Dune RTS game I used to play on Genesis.
