Uber has been granted a licence to run in Dundee in what is set to be a major shake-up for the city’s taxi industry.
Councillors approved the global firm’s application to operate an office from the Flour Mill complex on Commercial Street.
It came despite concerns being raised by existing taxi drivers.
Councillor Stewart Hunter, the council’s licensing committee convener, said there were “no legal grounds” to refuse the licence.
Concerns raised by existing taxi drivers? Maybe Uber wouldn't be so desired if the drivers here were more reliable.
Don't get me wrong, uber isn't great either, but the only way to beat their pricing is to offer a better service, and local taxis don't. They'll take your advanced booking, but that's no guarantee of a taxi showing up. Plus if I book a taxi and it turns up ten minutes before it was booked for, I don't want multiple calls telling me the taxi is outside and waiting. I know it is, you're early, I booked for a specific time for a reason. Taxis in this city are incredibly unreliable, many are still cash only and the number of times I've been driven to a different street with a similar name, then continue to be charged as they drive back to the right street is ridiculous.
I don't use uber because it's good, I use it because if I'm going to get treated like a mug, then it better he cheap.
