Moving cell from Apple, but keeping iPad for group messages?

Has anybody moved from Apple ecosystem but kept iPad? Iām looking to get rid of my iPhone for when Iām on the move, but keep an iPad at home for sporadic use. If I deregister my number from iMessage, can I still use my iPad for group texts Iām currently in .. or will I have to start all new messages?
