Driving range mats versus grass

Post Body

Just curious if other practicing players have had this experience. I have two local driving ranges I frequent. One is mats, the other grass. When I hit off the mats my swing is great. Shots flying long and straight, reasonably the expected distance for each club. When I go to the grass range I'm a damn mess. I tend to thin and top shots, and rolling balls abound.

I read an article that said mats simulate too perfect of conditions (for numerous reasons), but has anyone else noticed THAT much of a difference hitting off a grass range versus a piece of Astroturf?

(For reference, I'm about a 16 handicap.)
