My local chapter just had a vociferous debate on drug policy (starting with a local attempt at legalizing psychedelic therapy, but sprawling out into everything from weed to alcohol to opiates), with people taking a wide range of positions. These ranged from arguing that legalizing/decriminalizing are key steps to ending the drug war, and that prohibition harms addicts and tramples freedom (esp in the case of drugs with traditional spiritual uses in nonwestern cultures), to arguing that drugs are a tool of the capitalist state used to dull workers' political spirit and that legalizing is a libertarian capitalist project. I looked online and had trouble finding much of anything in terms of DSA resources or positions on drug legalization / decriminalization. Has your chapter taken any positions or actions on drug policy? Is there any sort of shared DSA vision of the place of drugs in a socialist society?
